I am a textile artist, landscape painter and teacher, living and working in the beautiful Kwazulu-Natal Midlands of South Africa. I have a private art studio, overlooking the Karkloof Valley and it is in this peaceful environment that I draw, paint, sew, write, journal and share my love of creativity with others.
My work is largely inspired by the African landscape, a by-product of having been raised in the bush on a remote cattle ranch in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe, followed by ten years living in Botswana, where I explored the dry Kalahari Desert and waterways of the Okavango Delta. These formative years undoubtedly laid the foundation for my creative life, but it was in the years that followed, when I was caught up in the Rhodesian Bush War and then having to flee to South Africa, that I found myself turning to nature to find solace in imagery that would keep me rooted and remind me of home.
For 18 years I lived in Kwazulu-Natal, where my husband and I raised a family and I developed a reputation as a fibre artist and teacher. Although the war was over, the damage it had inflicted ran deep and in 1999, unable to continue with my marriage, I set out alone to start a new life in Grahamstown. Here, I opened a private art studio and became an active member of the community. My Eastern Cape years were happy and successful and proved to be a time of great healing and fundamental to my personal growth and development as a professional artist. I exhibited widely and my artwork bloomed in the arid Karoo landscape.
At the beginning of 2022 it was time for a change and I moved to the KZN Midlands to begin a new chapter in my art career. I have built a new art studio and opened myself up to what the area has to offer and what I can bring in return.
Throughout this journey, nature and creativity have been my constant companions, and it is through both that I have healed and found my voice. It is my mission to share what I have learned and I have taught hundreds of students of all ages, how to draw, sew and see the world through the eyes of an artist, encouraging them to value their life stories, whilst giving them the tools to visually document them. I am particularly interested in the empowerment of women and those who are disadvantaged, but anyone who is keen to learn and participate in the creative journey is welcome to join me.
My artwork has been exhibited widely both in South Africa and internationally and published in numerous books and magazines. (see my CV)
